Fun Purchases in Thailand

Oh, the joy of having dresses hand made for my body! You would think that because of this-because of having things made that are hand tailored for my body-that all of the dresses I had made wold be a smashing success.

You would be wrong.

The lesson I learned: Just 'cuz something is hand fit for your bod, doesn't mean it's a good look. Unfortunately, I did not figure this out until after making a hefty purchase of a dress with waaaay too many pleats for my hips. I look to be about double in size. Which, is such a shame really.

But, what I also learned is that boddy hugging sheath dresses are perfect for me. Hilight the hourglass figure, without squeezing things too much.

Now I know.

Thailand Bound!

T-minus one week and counting until I'm off on my much-anticipated two week trip to Thailand. While I will be quite busy while there, building houses with Habitat for Humanity's Global Village program, I do hope to have some time to track down a good tailor and have some clothing made.

If I'm successful, I'll definitely be spending a good amount of time on upcoming posts crowing about my great, new, cheap, well made clothing. And if not, well then I imagine I'll be spending a good amount of time on upcoming posts whining about my inabilty to get great, new, cheap, well made clothing!

I likely won't have time to blog while away, so stay tuned for an update when I get back into the US in a few weeks!

The Tupperware of Clothing

Yesterday, I attended a fashion show at my friend Alicia's, that can only be described as a Tupperware party for clothes- Cabi. This is the second such event that I've attended. Sizing for their clothes goes up to XL or 16 (depending on the item), and for the most part, are generously cut. I bought two items from the first show I went to, and actually bought an L in one of the tops.

Pricing can be a bit high (upwards of $60 for a top), but the quality seems to follow as well. I didn't find anything yesterday that really grabbed me-there were two beautiful, grey sweaters, but unfortunately, both had wool-which is too itchy for me. :(

Guess, I'll have to venture out to the mall today to get my retail therapy elsewhere!

Shoe Lust

I've had my eye on these eye-catching (and comfortable!) Kate Spade Lacey Moccasin shoes for several months now: http://www.katespade.com/sm-lacey--pi-2673848.html Particularly, the sage green color. mmm mmm.

The soft, rubber soles make for a very comfy shoe. I tried it on this afternoon in Nordstrom, and the size runs very true to my normal 8.5M size. Nordy was still selling at the original price of $195, but as you can see in the Kate Spade link, they're on sale for $136. Nordy's is having thier semi-annual Women's sale on Nov 7. I think I'll try to hold out until then-just in case the sale price is even better. Fingers crossed!

11.07.07 Update: Bought the shoes in the Nordy sale. woo hoo! They're even more beautiful on my feet than on the rack! :)

Love those Lucy TShirts

I *love* Lucy T-Shirts! They’re inexpensive enough to wear to the gym and not feel guilty about getting sweaty, yet fashionable enough to wear out in public and not feel like you’re out in public wearing gym clothes.

As a girl that’s a standard XL on top, Lucy’s XL t-shirts (long and short sleeve) are the perfect size. Their cut and curve fit my bod perfectly without making me feel like I’m being shrink wrapped. Plus, the fact that the short sleeve version hits exactly mid-upper arm, and bottom of the shirts hits just right below the top of my pants makes for a very complimentary cut on anyone that is conscious about their upper arms or tummy.

The one caveat: Make sure the t's are actully the Lucy brand-as Lucy does carry other brands as well.

Huge thumbs up!

Welcome to my Blog

Yes, I realize it's October 2007 and that many of you have been blogging now for years. Call me a late adopter. :)

Blogging is something I've toyed around with for ages, but like a tattoo, I just couldn't settle on something (in this case, a topic) I loved enough to want on me (or with me!) for years to come.

Then, this past July while I was in Paris trying like hell to find some clothes at the last minute (lost luggage horror story...), it dawned on me: *this* is what my blog should be about. No, not about lost luggage horror stories and shopping in Paris, silly. But, rather, the trials and tribulations of a plus-size gal trying to find fashionable clothing-regardless of where she is in the world-or what her budget will allow.

Add to that the fact that fashion magazines seem to become even more hypocritical with every monthly issue..."yes, women should love thier bodies-regardless of the size....now, please enjoy viewing these size 0 models showing off clothing you'll NEVER fit it! bwah ha ha..." and I realize that there is just a huge, gaping disconnect in this world.

I could rant forever about this-and likely will in other posts, but to keep my intro post short-and not scare you off from future readings-I'll stop there.

So, here's the deal: I'll post as often as I can (at least once a week) about great clothing, accessories, shoes, hadbags, you name it. As a size 16/18, most of what I post will specifically be for other curvy girls, but hopefully others will enjoy my fashion finds as well.

I'll be on the lookout for specific stores, brands, labels in which I find clothing that is better than your standard mu-mu, and hopefully you'll enjoy reading about my adventures!

Cheers and thanks for reading!
